Common Name: Cardinal Plant

The Cardinal Plant (Lobelia cardinalis) is a versatile North American species that thrives in aquariums, paludariums, and terrariums, whether grown submerged or emersed. This unique plant works beautifully as a foreground or midground accent in your freshwater aquarium, and with the right care, it can even make a striking background feature when allowed to grow taller.

In its submerged form, the Cardinal Plant displays vibrant green leaves, sometimes tinged with red-purple on the undersides. This red-purple hue is more commonly seen in its emersed state, where the plant is also known for producing stunning bright red flowers.

To ensure optimal growth, the Cardinal Plant requires moderate to high lighting. Trimming and replanting its tops can help expand the plant’s coverage. While it thrives in nutrient-rich substrates and benefits from CO2 supplementation, these are not strictly necessary. Regular fertilization can also enhance the plant’s coloration and overall health, helping it to produce lush, vibrant foliage and side shoots.

Important: Remove tissue culture gel before planting. Simply wash the gel away or soak the plant in water and squeeze the gel off with your fingers.
